President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine announced on Monday that he had a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Ukrainian leader called PM Modi at a time when India is subject to high U.S. tariffs because it buys Russian energy.
According to Zelensky’s statement, the Ukrainian president urged India to back the peace initiative aimed at bringing the conflict to a conclusion.
It is crucial that India backs our peace initiatives and agrees that Ukraine must be included in all decisions pertaining to the country. “There will be no results from other formats,” Zelensky stated.
PM Modi responded by saying he made the Ukrainian president aware of India’s position in the conflict. “I communicated India’s steadfast stance that the problem must be resolved quickly and amicably. Modi stated on X that India is still dedicated to doing everything within its power to help in this area and to deepening its bilateral relations with Ukraine.
As the conflict in Ukraine approaches its fourth year, the Ukrainian leader also urged sanctions on Russia. “In order to lessen Russia’s potential and ability to finance the continuation of this war, it is necessary to limit the export of Russian energy, particularly oil,” Zelensky stated. This announcement coincides with the United States imposing 50% tariffs on India for its purchases of Russian oil.
Because India buys Russian oil and “fuels the war machine,” US President Donald Trump levied an additional 25% tariff on the country. PM Modi responded to Trump’s tariffs by saying that India will not sacrifice its farmers’ interests, even if doing so had negative economic effects. “Our farmers’ interests are our first concern. The interests of dairy farmers, fisherman, and farmers in general will never be compromised in India. I am prepared to pay the high price we will have to pay for it. “India is prepared for it,” Modi declared.
