Karur: On Saturday, a sizable gathering at the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, descended into a terrible tragedy when a sudden surge in the crowd and disorder left at least 31 people dead and many injured, many of them critically.
According to State Health Minister Ma Subramanian, there were six children, nine males, and sixteen women among the dead. On Sunday, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will travel to Karur to speak with the injured and assess the relief efforts. Thousands gathered to hear Vijay speak at the rally at Velusamipuram, which started at around 7:20 p.m. and at first created a joyous environment. However, when an unexpected power failure left the theater nearly dark, panic broke out. There was a stampede-like situation as the densely populated crowd swayed and rushed forward. Vijay had been resolving local complaints about illicit sand mining, mineral theft, and other problems impacting Karur before to the stampede tragedy. He harshly criticized the state government and foresaw a power shift in the upcoming six months.
However, as individuals fought to escape the crowded area in the dark, the joyous atmosphere swiftly descended into mayhem. Many people, including youngsters and old women, fainted, according to witnesses, as a result of the crowding and inadequate ventilation. When volunteers attempted to make room for ambulances and the police, they witnessed parents frantically carrying their children through the crowd. The large volume of individuals and closed entrances made rescue efforts challenging.
Police attempted to stabilize the scene of the event and clear paths for rescue vehicles under the direction of K. Josh Thangiah, the Karur Superintendent of Police. The injured were taken to the Karur Government Medical College Hospital by ambulances that were parked in a queue at the location. Officials stated that over 40 people are still in hospitals and that the death toll has now increased to 31.
Three children have been taken to the intensive care unit, according to doctors, while numerous others are in severe condition. Rapid relief and medical aid were ordered by Chief Minister Stalin, who has been keeping a careful eye on the situation from Chennai. Ministers Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Ma Subramanian hurried to Karur to supervise rescue efforts and medical treatment in response to his directives.
Davidson Devasirvatham, another DGP (law and order), was also sent in to help with crowd management and security coordination. Doctors and paramedics have been treating the injured all night long at the Karur Government Hospital, which officials have compared to a “war zone.”
V. Senthil Balaji, the former minister, visited the injured and evaluated the emergency services. The relatives of the victims have received full support from the state administration. On Sunday, CM Stalin is expected to travel to Karur to speak with the impacted individuals and assess the reaction to the disaster. Nowadays, concerns are being voiced over crowd control and safety protocols during sizable political events. TVK has not yet released a formal comment.
