Karur, September 27: Actor-turned-politician Vijay held a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday. The state is in deep sorrow following the stampede, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences. A rush broke out in the crowded audience that had assembled to hear Vijay speak at the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) gathering, leaving at least 36 persons dead and approximately 58 injured.
The Karur Government Medical College Hospital, where several injured people are receiving treatment, including three children who are still in the intensive care unit, has a “war-like” environment, according to local officials.
“My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones,” Prime Minister Modi said in response to the tragedy. I’m hoping for a speedy recovery for everyone hurt and sending them strength during this trying time.” In addition, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his profound sadness and ordered relief and rescue efforts to begin right away. Senior Ministers Ma Subramanian and Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi were hurried to Karur to supervise medical care coordination and support measures for the relatives of the victims.
Davidson Devasirvatham, an additional director general of police (law and order), arrived on the scene to oversee the situation. In order to meet with the injured and discuss safety plans for upcoming activities, Chief Minister Stalin is expected to travel to Karur early on Sunday morning. Witnesses reported that when a portion of the throng rushed forward, panic broke out in the crowded auditorium, causing individuals to swoon and fall. As police and volunteers scrambled to get the injured to hospitals, ambulances were delayed in arriving at the scene.
After a youngster was reported missing amid the pandemonium, a clearly distressed Vijay interrupted his speech and urged volunteers and the police to assist. In Tamil Nadu, the tragedy has spurred discussion about crowd management and safety protocols for major public meetings. To find any planning or management errors that might have led to the fatal stampede, authorities have opened an investigation. One of the worst rally-related tragedies in recent history, the Karur catastrophe has prompted urgent calls for improved crowd control and stricter safety regulations during public and political gatherings.
