Hyderabad: Producer Dulquer Salmaan apologizes in public, but is this a sign of anything more serious?
In Karnataka, the wildly popular movie Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra (known as Kotha Lokah in Telugu) has run into major problems. The depiction of Bengaluru as a center of hedonism, with a vibrant nightlife, club culture, and violence, has angered the state’s citizens. Outrage throughout the state has been sparked by a particular scene in the movie where a character calls Bengaluru women “without character.”
Dulquer Salmaan, the film’s producer, has apologized publicly and pledged to take down the inappropriate dialogue. There is a very thin line between a lighthearted jab and an insult, according to a well-known Kannada filmmaker who wishes to remain anonymous. The Karnataka people will not accept a joke like the one in the movie Lokah as amusing. Hindi films have a history of disparaging certain communities or geographical areas. Non-Hindi films are now doing the same. That needs to end.
