Srikakulam: During school hours, a teacher is shown sitting comfortably and conversing on the phone while two female pupils massage her feet in a startling video from the Bandapalli Tribal Girls’ Ashram School in the Srikakulam region of Andhra Pradesh. The video has gone viral.
In the footage, children wearing school uniforms sit on the floor next to the teacher, who is shown leaning back in a chair with her legs outstretched. Outrage about the abuse of power and the treatment of tribal students in government-run institutions has been sparked by the incident, which was allegedly captured on camera during class hours. Officials from the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Seethampeta, immediately took notice of the video once it appeared online. Pawar Swapnil Jagannath, the ITDA Project Officer, suspended the teacher while an investigation was conducted and ordered an investigation. The act is “unacceptable and unbecoming of an educator,” and authorities have promised stern action. Concerns regarding supervision in ashram schools, which are intended to educate and care for tribal children, have been rekindled by the occurrence.
