Apollo Children’s Hospitals completes 6,000 pediatric heart surgeries, marking a significant milestone.

Since 2009, Apollo Children’s Hospitals has performed 10,000 interventional cardiac procedures and more than 6,000 pediatric heart operations.
“The Department of Cardiac Sciences at Apollo has handled a wide range of high-risk and complex heart procedures in newborns and infants, many of which were performed within the first month of life,” stated Dr. Neville Solomon, Senior Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon, during a press briefing in Chennai.

Almost half of the surgeries were on infants younger than 28 days, including one that was operated four hours after birth and another that weighed only 650 grams.
Furthermore, Apollo has performed more than 1,500 procedures in its other facilities and overseas, including in Nigeria and Iraq. Among these were significant cardiac operations such as aortic arch and arterial switch repairs.
About 25–30% of the surgeries entailed open cardiac procedures, according to Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist Dr. C.S. Muthukumar, who highlighted advancements in treatment modalities.

throughout an effort to increase the capacity for pediatric cardiac care throughout Tamil Nadu and beyond, Apollo Children’s Hospitals has also teamed up with eight government medical schools to train the upcoming generation of cardiac surgeons.
Apollo collaborates with the Institute of Child Health (ICH) in Chennai to operate on dangerously unwell newborns’ hearts in an emergency.
In one instance, ICH Egmore received a referral from Madurai for a 19-day-old girl who underwent surgery at Apollo. The team claims that these collaborations have aided in providing advanced care to children who have been referred by the Tamil Nadu government, as well as from other Indian states and foreign nations.

The team’s capacity to manage complicated pediatric cases, both on their own and in conjunction with other institutions, has allowed them to care for children from all over India and abroad, said Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, Chief Executive Officer of Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, who commented on the accomplishment, saying it was a major step in their larger mission.
