RIYADH: The international regulatory body for yoga and yogasana, the Yoga Global Federation, formally commenced operations following its inaugural general session. Delegates and member nations from all five continents convened virtually in a display of global unity to ratify the federation’s inception and certify its initial leadership.
The summit affirmed the appointment of a leadership team with strong diplomatic and sporting knowledge, including Shaikha Al-Sabah (Kuwait), a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award, as president and Alwaleed Alkeaid (Saudi Arabia), an award-winning sport executive, as secretary-general.
The federation then announced that June 2026 would be the date of its first international yoga championship, marking the first big milestone in the organization’s sporting calendar.
The competition, which may coincide with the yearly International Day of Yoga on June 21, will give athletes from all over the world a platform and usher in a new era of competitive opportunities for the sport.
“Today, we have united the world of yoga under one roof,” stated Al-Sabah.
“With member nations joining us from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Oceania, we are truly a global family. We are excited to welcome the world to our first championship in 2026, together with our secretary-general, Alwaleed Alkeaid.
